Running poorly

Push the fitting towards the filter while simultaneously pushing the black plastic part towards the fitting. Then remove fitting while the black plastic part is recessed into the fitting. The black plastic part should act as the quick disconnect tool.

Yeah, I don't know if I got a bunk one or what. I can't even get it with pliers and a screwdriver in a vise.

Edit: I got it but it was a bear. No way I can do it on the one in the vehicle. Any reason I can't connect to the flare nut behind the filter? I think my tool has an adapter.

No reason as long as you're confident there are no leak at filter connection. Main thing you're trying to do is dead end the line.

Ok...been more than a little bit of a struggle to get this test done, but I did finally get it.

Couldn't get that Dorman adapter to go on to my filter. It went on the old one just fine, but couldn't get it on the new one. Probably doing something wrong.

Amazon shipped me the wrong piece to connect my gauge to the line. Had to pick up some different brass fittings at the hw store.

Was able to get my 3/8ths hose over the output male bit of the filter and hose clamp it down pretty good.

When I turned the key to the on position, initially nothing happened. Then, when I turned the key off, it shot up to 74psi.

t+[a few seconds] - 70
t+3m - 66
t+7m - 64
t+10m- 63.5
t+12m- 62
t+17m- 60

I went to do another test, but when I turned the key on, it went up to 90psi and started leaking out the "pressure release button". It stabilized in the 70's. It has a clear tube on the outlet side and I could see it coming out. Out of curiosity, I very gently pressed the button and saw a pretty significant drop in pressure for not much gas coming out. Makes me wonder if the gauge is leaking enough to ruin my results?

Anyway, I tested at the port under the hood again (after hooking everything back up), and still had 46-44.

So, this result shows that the pump can provide higher than 46 psi, and the regulator isn't functioning properly? Also shows that I may have a slight leak at the fuel pump or in my janky rigging of my fuel pressure gauge (or within the gauge itself)?

I'm guessing the next step is to put in a better fuel pressure regulator and see where that gets me? I see the AC Delco one is $65. Is there another brand name I could get that is quality enough at a possibly lower cost? If not, that's fine.

Edit: Side question: Any idea what the little white plastic clip on the fuel filter is called? The one that goes over the ring on the fuel filter output to let the fuel line clip on. I worry I'm gonna break it by messing with it too much, and would like to purchase a spare or two to have on hand. (the one that came with the new fuel filter already broke).
