Default s.e.s light code p0440

Ok, for the past 2 months this code pops up for about 2 minutes sometimes,or even a day.It just finally stayed on long enough for me to get it checked.I already bought a new gas cap and that wasnt the problem,so im wondering what else it could be?Also when i start it in the morning the exhaust smells like gas fumes,if that might have anything to do with it.
