Default Fuel Leak, P0440 code 99 LS 4x4 4dr

(Thought I would start my own thread on it instead of hijacking on another thread)

HELP - i just purchased a 99 LS 4x4 as a daily driver... today the "Service Engine Soon" light came on and it pulled a P0440 code. The fuel gauge wasn't working either so I went to fill up the truck and use the trip odometer as my gauge...the truck started leaking fuel exactly as mentioned above... I couldn't see much since it was after dark and didn't want to pull in the truck w/ leaking fuel into my garage. I read up on the evap code but not quite able to really narrow down what the problem could be. Thanks in advance

Well... i went ahead and changed the fuel pump since the tank had to be pulled anyway. To my discovery, the previous owner (or his previous mechanic) did a real hack job on the fuel pump/wires and such. He spliced in various places where he didn't need to, didn't use the appropriate crimp connectors, and used some makeshift gasket for the pump which he had to bend the retaining ring for it to seal... only to have a 5cm gap... a total band-aid hack job. Happy to say that my fuel gauge is working again and so far... no leaks... I also got to erase the code and hasn't come back... (I'm assuming due to the gasket around the fuel pump not fully sealed along with his fine and dandy wiring)... oh and i replaced the fuel filter as well.

...and yeah, taking the tank off is a pain in the @$$, especially with it practically FULL of fuel.
