Default SERIOUS 4x4 help needed!!!!

Background/specs

1986 2.8L 4x4 s10 blazer

I did a 2" body lift this weekend and now shes stuck in 4x4 high. Only thing I could think of was the 2 wires that go to the front differential were stressed and needed to be reterminated. Doesnt seem to be the case. I also enlarged the opening in the floorboards for the 4x4 shifter. Also didnt help.

question - should I be able to shift the 4x4 through the different positions while the vehicle is turned off and in park?

question - what should I look for???

My normal process for shifting into 4x4 and back out is this:

shift into reverse momentarily
Shift into nuetral
use floor shifter to engage 4x4 (high or low)
shift back into reverse
shift into drive and away I go.

I can do all of the following except it doest actually shift into 4x4 low or back to 2wh anymore.

When I shift into reverse I can hear the transfer case engage getting ready for the floor shifter to be moved.

PLEASE HELP!

Nothing in the transfer case would "engage getting ready for the floor shifter to be moved". You should be able to shift from 2HI to 4HI on the fly, not go into reverse or neutral... Neutral is necessary to go from HI range to LO range though.

Have you made sure that your shift linkage under the truck is still properly connected and adjusted correctly? Have you tried shifting it from underneath?

Shifting the xfer case should be done with the blazer running. Low range requires the tranny to be put into neutral. Sounds like you have pulled or moved something to do with the xfer case shifting linkage. You just gotta get under there and start being a detective.

If I try and shift into 4x4 low or hi any other way, you can hear the gears grinding. Has always been that way.

I had to adjust the shift linkage underneath the vehicle because when I lifted the body I could no longer shift into park or reverse. Neutral was as far left as I could shift. I had to loosen the linkage and adjust. The directions for the lift says I need to weld an extension on to it but I dont see the need. When I adjusted I followed my chilton/haynes (cant remember which one). It said to find neutral on the tranny with the linkage loose and put the shifter in the cab also in neutral . Tighten the linkage back up and good to go.
