Please help! What do I have to do to replace the shaft seal on the trans?

 

Could you be more specific as to the seal you are concerned with?

 

Sure, it's the small sealaround the shifter on the side of the trans.

Very unusual place for a leak... To replace this seal, you would need to remove the shift lever from the side of the transmission. IIRC, this is just a lip seal so you should be able to pry the old seal out, and then press the new seal in.

One thing that you will want to do first is make sure that the fluid is not coming from higher up. If it is coming from on top of the transmission, then you are somehow getting fluid out of the breather tube.

 

To get teh shift lever out you need to drop the pan. There is a bolt inside that you have to take off, then pry the shift lever out. replace seal. Plus you will have to remove the two bolts holding the spring steel thingy in place. Thats what makes the click noise when you shift gears.

Theres a little more to it then that, but that the gist of it.

Theres the red shower, and a new gasket you need for the pan, plus brake cleaner to get the mounting surfaces clean, no rags. And since you have the pan off, install a drain plug so you can drain the pan once per year and top off with new fluid, 4-5 quarts.

 

I may be wrong but, I have a tool.....somewhere, for removing the shaft seal while leaving the shaft in place. You simply remove the nut and lever from the shaft, then slide the tool ( I'll try to draw it), it's like a hollow pipe threaded on the outside on one end and threaded on the inside on the other end. Slide the tool on the shift shaft and thread it into the seal, then thread a bolt into the other end of the tool and it will pull the seal out of the trans.
The seal can be carefully tapped in with a 12 point 1/2" deep socket...IIRC.
