Default shifter in park....car in neutral

I have a 97 blazer Lt, 137,000mi., Automatic, (rebuilt trans. at 123,000mi). I got home, stopped, pushed button on shifter, put in park. Took foot off the brake and expected to sit still, but instead rolled backwards. So I depressed the brake and pushed the button to change gears, but the button wouldnt move. Now my shifter is stuck in park and feels like it moves farther forward then it should.... and I'm rolling like neutral. I have to use my E brake to sit still.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

weak dude, musta been a bad rebuild.

there is a park paul inside the trans wich sould engage park and stop the truck from rolling

also there should be a shift lock release located near the shifter itself to release it when no battery power or something like this.

I would start by checking the shifter cable down at the trans itself, it's on the drivers side of the trans.
pull the cable off and try to manually shift the trans right at the trans.

I called the guy who did the rebuild but no answer. I went outside to see if it would start but nothing. I hear the fuel pump working though...

It was raining last night so I checked it out this morning. The boot that covers the shifter cable was pulled off. It was connected with a bunch of electrical tape and the cable was bent in a wierd position. So I wasnt in neutral, I was stuck in reverse. Hit it with a bunch of PB blaster and reconnected with clean electrical tape until I find time for the repair.

Any good links or posts on how to change it out?
