Default Stuck in 4LO....

Title pretty much says it all. It goes into 4auto and 4HI pretty easy from a slight roll in drive, or in neutral. It also goes into 4LO pretty easy too. But getting it out of 4LO is a PITA. It will do it, but it takes multiple attempts in neutral rolling slightly forward.

  • I can hear the motor (solenoid, or motor?) engaging each time I hit the 2LO button to get it out, but the light blinks then returns to 4LO
  • No check engine light is on
  • After a few attempts, it will finally go into 2LO again.
Ideas? Maybe a fluid flush and new motor for the transfer case? Anything else that might cause that? I have rebuilt auto trannies before, but know pretty much nothing about 4x4 transfer cases. Ugg.

I always thought when going into and out of 4lo you need to be stopped in neutral?

To get in/out of 4lo you must be in neutral and rolling just a few mph. Mine does the same thing once in a while, seems to prefer a certain speed to disengage 4lo (3mph). When it's chilly out mine seems to take a few tries. Just sharing my .02
