Default Trannmission/transfer case install

My grandson is working on my 99 4wd for me. He got the transmission and transfer case out with some difficulty. It was stuck on guide pins. Now trying to re-install. Having issue installing as whole unit. Should transmission and transfer case be installed separately?

Just installing a transmission is sucky enough, having a tcase hanging off the end sounds awful.

Getting the tcase in by itself kinda sucks, too.
