I totally agree on not changing fluid if transmission is slipping or not shifting and missing a gear as usually it's a fast death from then on. But in his case where it sounds like it isn't down shifting I figured it prob wouldn't hurt anything. After rereading his post besides maybe not down shifting I wonder if maybe the torque converter could be staying in lock up mode?

1993 will be a 700R4 hydraulically controlled transmission. No inputs from engine will change the behavior of the transmission. It does use a TV cable to control pressure for shifting points, cable must be adjusted correctly or you will damage transmission. The unit also uses a mechanical governor which is susceptible to contamination that will cause various shifting problems. Check out this video on how to adjust TV cable.

As far as changing fluid I will say over my years that more transmissions have failed after a fluid change on a neglected trans than it helped. Good luck.

I’ll check out the video and see if I can find the cable afterwards. Hopefully it’ll help. But I’m curious because the first time I check the trans fluid, it’s black and then when I check it for a second time, it’s red. Has me really confused on that. But thanks for the vid!!

Easy way to identify the differences “A” is the 700R4 will have a cable at this location that runs up to engine. “B” will have a large electrical connector at this location.
