First check that the fluid level is right. Look st the color and smell the fluid to see if it has a burnt smell. If that all checks out may want to see if when you put in 4x4 things change if it is a 4x4. What year and mileage Blazer?

their 164,000 on it. It’s a 97 nothing changes in 4x4 the fluid is at the right level but is does smell like it’s a little burnt it’s most likely the original fluid, what do you think?

Does this happen on initial putting the transmission in gear? Or does it happen as you are driving?

Check engine light on? I would be hesitant to change out the fluid without knowing the service history. Shift solenoids most likely not a cause either. You may have an input sprag so torque converter failing. If you are going to drop the pan save the old fluid and change the filter and put old fluid back in. Good luck.

Yes reuse fluid and change filter. Just add enough new fluid to bring it up to correct level. You will get a wide range of opinions on this practice and I can only speak from my experience. In the 30+ years of transmission repair business I can tell you the results of changing out fluid in a high mileage vehicle with no known service history has a maybe 10% rate of working and then it’s short lived. If a filter is dirty or plugged something inside the transmission failed to plug the filter.
