Transmission can't shift to park
I have a 95 S-10 4 door with 150k miles on it and it just started not shifting into park. The tranny operates normally otherwise and the vehicle can be started from neutral ok. I have had this vehicle since new and the tranny has been serviced regularly over the years. Last service was August. Anyways,I thought it might be the neutral safety switch but the back-up lights work ok.The brake lights work through their own switch and they work also. I am at a dead end. The Haynes manual mentions something about adjusting the neutral safety sw, but I am at a loss for ideas. Thanks, Gregg
I don't know about the 2nd gens but my 94 was same way when I first got it ended up just being a shift linkage adjustment took about 3 minutes to fix and didn't cost a penny. This assumes that the 2nd gens use the rod type linkage and not a cable I never had one so I don't know I'm sure someone else will though.
what does wont shift to park mean?
1. Does that mean when you put the shifter in park the vehicle still rolls.
or.
2. You physically cant move the shifter to the park location.
Have a helper move the shifter while you watch the cable and linkage under the car. You can disconnect the cable from the trans and shift the lever by hand to see if park works that way.
YOu could have...
Cable problem, cable adjustment problem, internal linkage problem, ect.

Thanks for the replies. What I mean by won't....the column shifter will not physically shift into thepark detent on the indicator and will not put the tranny in park. I have had to leave it in neutral with the parking brake engaged on level ground.
can you shift it into 1st gear?
Your linkage may be out of adjustment or loose.
Crawl under and look at the linkage, is there a nut holding it to the tranny, is the nut still there or has that pin slide out?
