transmission failure and replacement ?s

Have a 99 jimmy 4x4...
Transmission went out, lost reverse and whines when running... Sounds like the sunshell. Since money's a little tight (and probably selling it soon), I might just go the used junkyard route when replacing this thing... But wondering a couple of things...
Do I need to replace the torque converter as well, or just the transmission?
Can I get any 4l60e transmission, or only specific ones interchange? (I'm looking at one from a 98 blazer, but even then...)
Does the transfer case make a difference (got the automatic case, w/ the "auto 4wd" button)?
Anything else I should look for? What would be a good labour $ for just a swap? I'm outside Seattle, if that matters...
Thanks for your help.

Hello
As for trans you need 1997 to 2003 you have the one piece bellhousing.
As for transfer case, no worry. If you find a good 2 wheel drive unit in the
right years get it. Easy to convert to 4 wheel drive. Yes always change torque converter.
I live in the Snohomish area. Where are you.

The conversion from 2wd to 4wd requires the complete gutting of the transmission. So in this case, 'easy' is a very relative term...
I would never recommend going with an older transmission. But yes, technically, a 97+ transmission should work. You have the two piece transmission (with removable bell housing) though, not the one piece.
I would replace the torque converter if you are replacing the transmission. I would not recommend using a used torque converter.
I would see how expensive it is to just get the sunshell replaced. A friend from work had it done for $400.

To convert a drive a 2 wheel drive to four wheel drive is a process that's not hard to do. If one has the tools it's easy. If one does not have the correct tools it can be hard. If you live in the Seattle area I can help one do it, I have the correct tools.
Good time to install a Transgo shift improvement kit. New harden separator plate. Pull pump and install new harden pump rings to stop pump failure.
Pull out input drum and look at the 3-4 clutch pack where most of the troubles are.
I can get the factory heat treated sunshells.
The factory heat treated ones have gone over a million cycles without failure.
I finished up one for a friend and cost of doing it was under 300 dollars.
If one needs a high quality torque converter go to the following site.
