Default Transmission issues

So I need to help my brother source a transmission. The one in his 98 Blazer has seen better days.
My question is this....What year Blazer 4L60E transmissions will work? Ive heard that 98 and up transmissions are the worst because they changed to cheaper parts.
The Blazer has a 4.3 with 4x4.
Is it possible to use a earlier model 4L60E without messing with computer stuff?
Im going to source one from a salvage yard (yes its a crap shoot). I found one for my Camaro and it works great!!

Thanks in advance for the help.

I did a quick search on the forum before making the thread, so dont flame me too bad.
