Default Transmission not always upshifting as RPMs climb

My daughter had her '96 Jimmy hang up in a lower gear twice yesterday as she went to accelerate. It would downshift, RPMs would climb (the engine would roar) and it wouldn't updshift until she backed off on the gas. It did it once on the interstate and once in town. Unfortunately she drove 700 miles away from home yesterday so I can't look at it. I thought shift interlock cable or possibly low on fluid. I did a search though on this forum and it looks like it could be the TPS going bad. Does it sound like it could be that when it only happened twice?

Her initial comment was that it wasn't accelerating well some times. She was loaded down and it was hot in CO (over 100) and the AC was on high. But after talking with her she said the RPMs went way up when it happened so I figured transmission related.

Thanks.

I'm having the same issue and ac ouple buddies said it might be the torque converter but I have not had the time to get into that. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?

Not yet, she is still 700 miles away. I originally thought it was a transmission issue but after reading more replies in the forum I am think more that it might be the TPS. Next time I see her will be in July and I am thinking of buying a TPS, since I can get one for about $30 and taking it out with me, along with my scanner, and swapping it as a preventive maintenance item since she won't have the truck home again before Christmas.

I replaced the TPS in my blazer in Friday and it had no effect on my issue. That puts me back to believing its a trans/ torque converter issue. I am going to try and do a little more research and see if I can determine if its electrical or mechanical. Hopefully you have better luck.
