i just received a 1970 K5 Blazer, it has been sitting for a long time. my father tryed to get it running in the mid 90's, the only thing he managed to do was #1 blow out the cherry bombs and #2 found out it had bad gas(water in it). the blazer was drove on a regular bases in the 80's then parted in the late 80's.

my question is do you think i could tinker with the motor and get it running or is the thing shot from sitting so long?

 

You should be able to get it going. I would drain the fuel tank and flush it out really well before putting new gas into it. After that, change the oil. Then, I would go through and do a complete tune up (plugs, wires, cap, & rotor). And last, before turning the motor over, I would remove the distributor after marking the position of the rotor to the distributor base and prime the oil system. You can pick up a oil priming tool for this purpose. This tool comes in quite handy, especially if you store a vehicle for any extended length of time. It is always a good idea to prime the oiling system.

 

In addition to swartlkk advice, it may also not be a bad idea to have the alternator bench tested, change out the coolant and change out the thermostat while your at it.

the gas tank having water in it, could this be a problem as far as rust in the tank?

 

It has been sitting for quite a while so it would be a good idea to pull all the spark plugs out and squirt a few shots of wd 40 or oil in each cylinder, let it sit for a day or 2 and then crank it over with out the plugs in it to blow any junk out that may be in the cylinders.
The best way to know if the fuel tank is ok is to drop the tank, pull the sending unit/float out and shine a light down in the tank to see.

 

took a quick look at the blazer today, driver side rocker is gone, small hole in floor pan on drivers side. tail gate is pretty bad. checked the brake fluid and the front was dry rear still had fluid.

does anyone know if the tailgates on the blazers were the same as the pickup trucks?

 

Yes the tailgate is the same.

The tailgates are the same exact thing. The glass hinges down from the top.
