Default broken shifter mounting tab

Hey all,

I am new to the forum and hope to be of some help here. I recently picked up my 1st k5 last month. She s a 79 with the cheyenne package and a 400. Its a bit rough in some areas but I am slowly getting the kinks ironed out as time and money allow. Right now I am stumped on an issue and I am hoping for some advice. This truck is an auto shift and the mounting ear that holds the shifter in place with a press pin has broken. I have the piece but the spring that provides tension is also missing. I can see that this sleeve CAN be removed but my question is how? I can grab a replacement at the bone yard but I need to get this old one off first...any thoughts?

I could use jb weld but this does not address the problem of getting the tension spring back in.

Thanks guys!

You are going to have to dismantle the steering column to get to the shift collar. There are a number of well documented how-to's on tilt steering column rebuilds on the internet, however the standard GM steering column isn't as well covered. There are some similarities and the standard non-tilt column is much less complicated on the inside.

that or just replace the entire column if it seems to be to big of a job for you. ive torn apart a few columns and most circumstances i just replace the entire thing. pick and pulls are cheaper to get them at but if you go to a already pulled place they run about 100

I appreciate all the replies!

around here (and probably most places) people seem to destroy columns at the junk yard. Its like they go in for a one or two pieces, and destroy the whole unit in the process. I was in the yard last weekend and out of 9 trucks, only 1 column was viable. The column rebuild is certainly w/in my mechanical abilities, I am just wondering if it is withing the limits of my patients!

if you dont have a chiltons or something with a good break down picture take pictures as you go along to remember where everything goes. as far as special tools go you will need a steering wheel puller for the plate behind the wheel and i think there are some torx screws back there
