Is there any way to tell how many teeth (168 or 153)my flywheel has without removing the shield?

RE: flywheel

The 153 tooth flywheel is 12.75" in diameter while the 168 tooth flywheel is 14" in diameter. However that doesn't answer your question... I don't know of any way to tell how large the flywheel is without the cover off...

You can remove the starter motor, paint a tooth on the flex plate with white paint, then turn the flexplate with a flat blade screwdiver til you reach the painted tooth again. Don't lose count...:)

If it has the original engine, stop by or call any dealer with your VIN and they should be able to tell you, or at least give you a part number which you can have cross-referenced at any parts store. I beleive that all engines with the one-piece real main seal (1987 and up) had the smaller ring gear on the flexplate (153 tooth).
