Is there any way to tell how many teeth (168 or 153)my flywheel has without removing the shield?

The 153 tooth flywheel is 12.75" in diameter while the 168 tooth flywheel is 14" in diameter. However that doesn't answer your question... I don't know of any way to tell how large the flywheel is without the cover off...

You can remove the starter motor, paint a tooth on the flex plate with white paint, then turn the flexplate with a flat blade screwdiver til you reach the painted tooth again. Don't lose count...

If it has the original engine, stop by or call any dealer with your VIN and they should be able to tell you, or at least give you a part number which you can have cross-referenced at any parts store. I beleive that all engines with the one-piece real main seal (1987 and up) had the smaller ring gear on the flexplate (153 tooth).
