Angry Flywheel Bolts Are to long help!!! 78 Jimmy/K5

I guess the story is that the previous owner, "MY BUDDY" drove the Jimmy with a cracked Flywheel and it shattered taking the old TH350 bell housing with it, the previous owner bought a rebuilt transmission, Torque converter, and bought a new Flywheel and bolts

So then the previous owner paid some crackhead to install the new transmission and all the new parts and when everything was installed and they tried to turn the engine over it was acting like the engine was frozen binding the starter on the Flywheel and ruining the **** out of the starter, so I get a phone call "Hey you wanna buy a cheap Jimmy it wont turn over?

So I inspect the Jimmy and pick his brain about **** and come to find out the Flywheel bolts are about 1/4" to long and they are hitting the back of the block/rear main seal area thus binding the engine and not allowing it to turn over

I dropped the T/case and Tranny and exhaust in hopes that the moron mechanic that installed everythinghad put the Flywheel in backwards but much to my dissapointment he installed it correctly and now I am stumped as to why the Flywheel bolts are to long

The bolts even had 1/8" washers on them and the bolts were still too long......

So my questions are: Do they sell different length Fly bolts or can I double up on the washers? I really dont like the idea of having washers on there and I dont want to end up with clearance problems when I bolt the torque converter back in,

I need to know what my options are here, I really want to get this thing running

Its got the 350/350 setup and its got the NP203 T/case

Any help would be much appreciated, is there something that I am missing here or what? The flywheel bolts are From Kragen/Orielly auto parts they are your standard looking 12 point hardened steel bolts,

Thanks in advance sorry for the novel I wrote but I wanted everyone to have a little backround on the vehicle so I don't get a million questions

You should be able to get proper length bolts. You may have bolts for a manual trans flywheel instead of an automatic flex plate.

I wouldn't recommend using washers. If you were to cut them off, you would need to get a fine thread nut to thread on them before you cut each one, then chamfer the edge and remove the nut.

Unhappy

Thanks for a quick reply, so what are the proper terms here because I allways called a Auto trans Flywheel and called it a Flexplate for Manual trans,

Anyhow, yeah if I cut them I was gonna put a nut on it first and then chamfer the ends, I just wanted to throw my dillema past u guys on here to make sure I wasnt missing something here.

Just think of it this way. Which one is flexible and which one is rigid.

A clutch flywheel is VERY rigid and needs to be to perform the task it is there to do. Flywheels can be light so they can spin quickly or heavy so they have a lot of inertia once spinning.

Flexplates are typically made out of stamped steel welded to a ring gear for the starter.

I'm going to move this into the Full Size Tech section.

No B1Heqh54 I wasn't the moron that fully installed the transmisson and trans case before checking to make sure that the motor spun, I mean wouldn't you have been able to tell that something was wrong when installing the bolts and the flywheel/motor didn't turn over as you were tightening the bolts?

I have been the proud/ confused owner of this 78 Jimmy For a whole 12 hours man now I;m just trying to put here back together and running so I can take it the smog shop (I live in CA) and get this old beast on the road

78 Jimmy 350/350 AT
6 inch lift
35 inch tires
12 bolt rear
Dana 44 front

91 Blazer S10 Tahoe edition

lol I can't believe it left there like that! I hope you don't get the long bolts out and find out they were a decoy for a siezed engine. I'm sure your buddy wouldn't do that, but the other guy doesn't sound too trustworthy.

She's an awesome lookin' beast though, I would've been in love whether she turned over or not. A real polar bear stalker in that snow camo.

Polar bear stalker lmfao I love it.....yeah the first thing I did after I dropped the 300 lb T/case and trans was make sure the engine turned over, believe me even if that beast had a seized engine I would still took her I just would thrown in a 454

I will post my progress on here with this project my plans are more of a Resto mod then anything else I am kinda leaning towards turning into a rock crawler but thats all dependant on my budget, more than anything else I just wanna fix whats broken and get her smogged and see how she feels on the road
