Question Front end clicking?

I'm new to this group so if this has been discussed i apologize, i have a 1976 K5 4x4, it has a loud clicking noise from the right front. When i put the whole truck on stands the noise goes away. its definitely a drive line noise just not sure what it could be. Brakes are all new, wheels are not rubbing. any thoughts??

Is it a full-time 4x4 (NP203), or does it have locking hubs? Sounds like it could be a bad axle shaft u-joint. Is it worse when you turn?

Yes, its a NP203 with automatic hubs and is clicking no matter if i turn or not, I do think it gets a little worse when turning. i might switch to manual Warn hub locks if i have to pull it apart.

Unless it has a part-time kit installed, you can't use manual hubs. It won't move unless you use one of the LOC positions on the shifter, which would defeat the purpose.

I would visually inspect the joints in the front axles, and maybe jack the front end up and turn the wheels to see if you can duplicate the noise. Also check the driveshaft u-joints, but if those were bad, you would probably get a vibration at road speeds rather than a clicking noise.

Ok thanks, it doesn't make the noise when the truck is off the ground, it has a 12" lift so i have new rear drive shaft and rebuilt front drive shaft but i haven't checked the axle u joints yet.

12" NICE, i had a 78 with 14 years ago. Funnest damn truck ever 40" groundhogs on it,gettin a chub thinkin about it lmao, post a few pics.
i agree with Tom, sounds like u-joints either on the end of the axl or drive line but since they are new.....
while you got it in the air put a jack under the tire and give it some action and inspect the front end parts. "ticking" is usually u-joints or hubs.
is it a constant "ticking" or just when you turn a certain way?
remember we want some pics :-)
