Default Fuel gauge reads past full

On my friends 86 K5 blazer the fuel gauge reads past full. I know for sure that there is not a full tank of fuel in it because it ran out when we put it in the garage. Could there be a loose or bad ground going to the tank? My dad seemed to think there was maybe a short somewhere in the wiring. Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

its a ground. or something bad inside the sending unit. ive had so many k5 blazers where it does that. if the sending unit wire brakes the gauges just kinda stays wherever it is. so see if you can see a black wire coming out somewhere from the top of the tank. you might get lucky and just have to clean the wire at the frame but most of mine have broke off the sending unit itself. i usually just drill a self tapping screw back into where it broke off

Thanks for the info. I will drop the tank and clean some things up and see what all is going on.
