Has anyone tried cutting an access hole in the floor board over the gas tank to get the fuel pump out without dropping the tank?

I want to try this on my 89 full size blazer but not sure about any unknown problems.

ive done it in about every k5 or suburban ive ever owned. not because of fuel pump issues but sending unit issues, my grounds always broke off the sending unit. its just a lot of common sense, dont drill or cut into the tank and figure out a plan of resealing the floor back in place, welding would probably be a bad idea (but have known people to do it).

hardest part is trying to get the hole centered right above, i always tried to measure and figure out where one of the corners is gonna be then drill a small hole then leave the drill bit sticking through the floor then go under the truck and see where its at in reference to the sending unit.

 

Good to follow the method above of drilling a few shallow holes to get an idea of where you want to cut the hole.

Once the hole is cut get a piece of donor floor a little bit larger than the opening and bolt it in place. You can get to the pump/sender easily if you ever have to again.

I will cut the hole and install it when it arrives.

Will a grinder with a cutting wheel (more sparks) work best or is a reciprocating saw with a short blade better?

I'd get a the harbor freight body saw, Very easy to control and it will make a nice cur.

 

Done! worked out great , I cut a 12" x12" hole in the center of the bed @ 15 1/2" from the closed tail gate to the center of the hole.
Put in three metal braces with screws and then screwed the cut out piece to the braces, sealed it up with silicone.
