Thumbs down HELP BACKFIRE WONT START 87 k5

Hi I did a full time up on my 87 k5 blazer rotor cap plugs wires oil after I did it it would just kind of crank but never turn on so I spoke to someone and they said my distributor may be on back wards and to do a 180 with the wires now when I crank it it sputters and backfires but no start I need help in potentially what's wrong how to get it running now that I have to take it 75 miles tomorrow and I can't even get it started

It does sound like you don't have the correct wiring order..... when you replaced the wires, did you mark anything on the wires or the cap? My advice is to start from scratch. Unplug all the wires from the cap first and use whiteout or masking tape and number all the wires to their cylinder (near the end that plugs into cap).

Next, remove the cap double check the points and make sure they aren't damaged (don't assume). Also remove rotor and verify it's not damaged either and that it only sits one way on the dizzy (you could have installed this backwards & not wires). Mark with a sharpie, starting with cylinder 1 on the cap (make sure you have correct point) 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 Clockwise on the distributor.

Driver's side of the engine is odd numbered cylinders with #1 on the front. Passenger side of the engine is even numbered cylinders with #2 at the front.

With #1 cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke, #1 will be at about the 7 o'clock position of the distributor viewed from the front of the engine. Align the timing mark on the crankshaft to zero degrees top dead center.

I broke this down the best I could.... let me know how you make out or if you have more questions. Good luck

I agree with everything cubawashere said except the part about the rotor being in the 7 0'clock position, it should be in about the 5 o'clock position or basicall pointing at the #1 cylinder as you stand in front of the vehicle looking at the motor. That'll get ya in the ball park to get your engine started, then get yer timing right for it to run well.
