Need Help With Axle Replacement

Default Need Help With Axle Replacement

Like the title says i am going to be needing some help changing both my axle seals on my 73 k5, i am in southern orange county, i can provide beer or what not. I am planning on doing this on sunday.

It should be fairly straight forward. You likely have the 12 bolt rear.

For the axle seals:
After removing the brake drums, you will have to pop the diff cover off, remove the retaining bolt for the differential cross shaft, then push the axles in, and remove the c-clip to allow for the removal of the axle. Pry the old seal out and tap in the new seal. Now would be a good time to replace the wheel bearings to.

For the pinion seal:
Clean off the exposed threads on the end of the pinion. Mark the end of the pinion, the nut, and the yoke for alignment purposes and then snap a picture of the yoke/nut to record the number of exposed threads. Remove the pinion nut (air tools make this a TON easier), then the yoke. Pry out the old seal and tap in the new. Reinstall the yoke and nut, tightening the nut until the # of exposed threads is proper and your alignment marks line up.

Hopefully you do not have to do the front axle...
