I just bought a 92 1500 blazer that i'm having to repair parts here and there. It has 184k miles on the original engine. I've replaced the fuel injectors, spark plugs and cap, o2 sensor, and erg sensor. Now its making the wonderful ticking sound. The ticking is from the fuel injectors and I have plenty of oil. Should I keep replacing the small parts until it finally dies or bite the bullet and rebuild?

 

A new engine doesn't come with any of those parts you've replaced. If it's worn out, rebuild it. If not, leave it alone.

 

The deciding factors are mileage, OIL pressure and cylinder compression.

I rebuilt a 95 S10 and it runs like new. The truck, not the engine. Glad I did it. Probably $4500 in parts but try buying a new truck for that money!

The parts youve replaced are minor repairs, I wouldnt condemn an engine based on that.

Theres a gotcha in those Vortecs- and 350s also and thats air leaks on the intake manifold- they kill the oil pressure.

 

If it helps my own K1500 made it to 450,000 miles on the original engine. It was still running when we pulled it but a quart of 50W racing oil every two weeks was getting expensive.

Mine had that fuel injector tick for years and years, so I think you've got some mileage left on yours

 

When my 92 rolled over 400,000 miles I installed a crate engine. The original engine was still running fine, I was just worried about reliability. Now I am slowly rebuilding the old motor as time permits while enjoying the confidence of a brand new GM crate motor.

 

Yes. It mignt run fine but dont trust it..running fine today can turn into " crank bearings gave out and lost oil pressure" tomorrow.
