2000 intake manifoid thread lock or sealant?

As for the smell, there might be coolant on the exhaust manifolds, or exhaust pipe, that needs to burn off. Make sure there are no leaks.

Yup, that's how to do it, one at a time. The two front bolts are "neatly tucked away" under the AC compressor and alternator, so they'll have to be moved to get at them. The rest of them are in plain sight. It's not like they're going to walk out right away, it usually takes a while.

I have another question. When we took the lower intake off, the fitting that the pcv valve hose connects to had a orange foam buildup on the inside of the intake. I not sure if it is on the upper or lower intake but is was quite a bit of this buld up there. Could this be from the transfer case filling with transmission fluild? My son says he still smells something but he doesn't think it is antifreeze. I didn't have time to check the fluid level in the transfer case. Would is be burning it and making a smell?

The orange crud is probably residue from the coolant getting into the oil. If it were burning trans fluid, you'd have serious white clouds of smoke, (not steam) from the tail pipe. Very easy to check the transfer case fluid level: Remove the upper, (fill) plug from the rear of the transfer case. If fluid runs out, the transfer case input shaft seal is leaking. The transfer case must be removed to replace the seal. Good idea to replace the vacuum switch on the transfer case at the same time.
