2wd or 4wd? Which do you have
2WD. Don't need a 4x4 here in Fresno,Cali unless you go up to the snow/mountains, which I only do one in a blue moon and even then there is the snow chain/cable option plus better MPG's in 2WD!!!

I have 2 4x4's a 96 Blazer and a 94 Sonoma, up here in NY you need them. I couldn't live with out them. They are fantastic in the snow and slush. Our road here is the last to get plowed in the winter and as my driveway has a slight incline on it, its super for getting in the driveway with a foot of new snow on. I used to have a 95 2wd Blazer and it was useless off the pavement.
I don't mean to step on any toes but isn't 4x4 the pointof buying a truck/suv?! I mean I guess it depends on your tastes but jeez!!!! My favorite thing is to take my truck some placea vehiclehas no business being and making that place my bitch! Couldn't do it with 2wd that's for damn sure!
I somewhat agree with slick, I would not buy a truck unless it is a 4X4. However I live in Minnesota and the extra traction comes in handy some days. That being said, 98% of my driving doesn't have the front wheels engaged.
A good set of studded winter tires is all anybody needs
Though a limited slip or locking diff is a nice bonus
My old 2WD '85 S10 (with an open diff, and non-studded tires) easilly made its way through 2 - 3 feet of snow.
I've only used my 4x4 for unstucking other people [8D]
