I want to put new axles on my blazer and convert to four wheel drive. Has anybody got good conversion ideas

 

So you have a 2wd Blazer and want to turn it into a 4wd one? That would a lot of work.

 

It's virtually impossible to convert a 2WD to 4WD using factory parts. They use completely different front suspension, and a different frame.

The best (and only reasonably easy) way is to use a solid front axle from another vehicle. Depending on how you plan to use it, a Dana 30 from a Jeep XJ (Cherokee) or YJ (leaf spring Wrangler) is a pretty popular choice. You can use a Ford 8.8 rear from an Explorer for a strength upgrade with a matching lug pattern. I think they're both available from the factory with a 4.10 gear ratio, which would be kind of a bonus. If you're looking for a heavier duty front axle, you can use a Dana 44 from a Jeep Wagoneer, or one of many full-size truck options. It just depends on how much money you want to spend, and how much work you want to do.

Obviously, you would also need a transfer case, 4WD transmission, and all the other stuff that goes along with that. If you just need a little extra traction for bad weather, and you don't plan to do any serious off-roading, you may be way ahead to just sell your Blazer and buy a 4x4.
