Or do you think there wouldn't be enough clearance for it to fit between the side and and tailgate?

 

the higher the antenna the better the reception, I don't think lowering the mount to put a bigger antenna on and staying at the same height will make much difference. although a quality antenna tuned to your radio will make a big difference..

I had a ****ty magnet mount i got at walmart thats about 2ft on the roof. I really dont want an antenna much above a ft about the roof so i figured if i got a better antenna and monuted it where iI was thinking it would still be better.
