Sorry, thought you unbolted the housing not ripped the can off.
I've had to use a chisel & rubber mallet to brake the seal, just make sure you do it on an angle in the direction you would of to remove the filter can.

All you need is to lube it with some motor oil. I would tip the old filter sideways, and put some used oil from that on my finger, and use that to lube it. Never had any leaks, or trouble pulling my filters off. Make sure the whole gasket has a coating.

I had a problem getting mine off once as well. I ended up removing the oil filter adapter from the fender and using a vice and a pipe wrench. It was on there like a good thing. Screwdriver trick didn't work nor a strap wrench or filter wrench. Stupid dummies who don't oil the seal first :@

why would you use the old oil Matt? before installing it, i've always just rubbed a little oil on the seal, after i've filled the filter, and made sure it was never screwed on too tight (it's not a lug nut, no need for 150 ft-lbs of torque).

i've come close to the same situation you're in now, although the damn filter finally came off, just before reaching that state. you haven't told us what you're working on (most of us have presumed it was a 4x4. if it is, take the filter adapter off the truck, hold it really well in a vice (or have a trusting friend hold it tightly) and tap it off with a hammer and chisel. just be careful not to nick the sealing surface.

even if it's a 2WD, same method applies.

have you just bought this truck? i'm kinda curious as to why the filter is so stuck (i'm sure we all are).

The old oil is just acting as a lubricant for the gasket. It doesn't need to be new. Besides, why waist your new stuff?

you're not gonna waste any new oil-how much oil do you use to lube the seal anyways? you're only gonna dip your finger into the oil that's already sitting in the filter after you've filled it up.

don't any of you guys prefill the filter?

I am the same, I use some of the old oil to lube up the gasket real good. Just seems easier, usually my hands are covered in it anyway.

I don't prefill my filter. You don't have to. That whole topic is just based on opinion, though.
