I've been eye-balling this thread the last few days or so and have been meaning to post in it. I had a very similar problem when I bought my Blazer this summer. I threw in the towel after an hour and went to my guru (dad) and he couldn't get it to budge. Finally with light heat it came off. Glad you got the old filter off. I have switched to the K&N wrench on style and have had zero problems with them. Also, just want to say that I also use the old oil to lube the new filter. Just the way my dad taught me to do an oil change.

glad to hear it's finally fixed!

the worst filter i've ever come across was on my Dad's '85 Buick wagon. the car leaked oil so much, he used to just put in the old oil from his work truck (!) when the car was low. i decided to do a full service on his car when he moved, and after twisting the crap outta the filter (with a BF screwdriver), i found out this was what he was doing regarding putting oil in it-and he never changed the filter for 2 1/2 years!

and to think, i learned (most of) what i know from working around his truck since i was 3.

i've had the same problem i crushed it with chanalocks i took a flat tip and put on the edge of the filter right next to where it mounts to the aluminum and used a hammer to screw it off if ya no what i mean i then resorted to the k&n filter with the nut head on it much much easier as the filter not coming off happened twice to me andy idea as to why this happens

^^^ ummm, maybe you put it on too tight? or you wait too long between oil changes?

if you're having filters getting stuck semi-regularly, the "nut" on the K&N filters probably won't help much.

if you don't do the first 2 things i said, then start looking @ you filter adapter, amybe it's damaged.

Din't know if you change the oil when it's hot but that helps a lot with stubborn filters. I only change it when it's at operating temp.

I've had that issue as well. I only hand-tighten (feel it "catch" then give it 1/4 turn) my filters and put generous amount of new oil on the gasket (on the gasket, under the gasket, around the housing) but mine get stuck there as well. My interval is 3000 miles. I've had to use a pipe wrench at times.

Read all posts. The filter is trashed. Nothing left but the thread ring part. We bought this blazer exactly a week ago today. Drove it the same day to do arronds (run around doing crap) so Sunday Retacent went to change the oil and do other misc tasks to it. Had it towed to my local Midas where it has been since Monday. Two days ago ask em to remove the oil filter housing, as we are not anywhere near mechanics. Not done it yet. As it was being loaded onto the tow bed gasoline poured out of the tank around the upper seal. SO heating the filter thingie is out of the question with torch. we have looked for a darn book all week, cant find one. Going to just order the dam thing from somewhere. LIFE story over...HOW do we take off the housing that holds the filter? BTW i'm not retacent, which im sure you noticed by now, im his girl, and if I have to mess with this I will. Not afarid of dirty work. Thanks Dede

i found this---> 1985 Chevrolet S-10 & S-10 Blazer Service Manual
Original factory service manual used to diagnose and repair your vehicle.
Price: $85.00. Holy Moly. It is probably worth that amount, but my goodness we buy used autos because we can't afford new ones. LOL

I work at an express lube at a dealership. One thing i noticed is the kind of filter you use makes alot of difference as to if they get stuck. If you put them on to tight they will be hard to get off but even on my blazer i just changed it yesterday and to do it by hand it was way to tight. If you have a ban wrench use it! Every blazer ive taken the filter off of i have no problems with a ban wrench. On the other hand though if your using a cheap filter thats another reason y its getting stuck. You may not want to spend the money on a little better filter but dont complain that you cant get it off if its stuck. I use premium guard filters that we have at work n mine has always kum off along with everyother blazer we put them on. So to summerize it up..... use a good filter, lube the gasket and tighten it by hand. Oh and if you dont have a ban wrench go buy one!
