Talking Didn't know that the intake manifold

Gaskets were plastic....

I had a leaking (not to bad) but I did not want to take a chance so I bring it to the garage that I know and they confirmed it....

The told me before they took it apart that the gasket was plastic with some rubber on it... I was like Get the f*ck out of here...

When the mechanic took it apart he showed me, I was shocked, I always thought they were cork or some other material...

It didn't leak when it was warm out but this morning it was 1 degree and when I was warming it up it leaked badly and by the time I got to the garage it stopped...

So they ordered a Felpro "Updated" gasket that is metal with rubber and the design was alot better in terms of sealing...

Then I needed a new distributer he showed me the old one and it was bad... so since it had to come out he never charged me labor..

so it wasn't bad..

when he removed the old gasket that WAS BAD, it fell apart.... But I never had antifreeze in the oil tho, I would of noticed...

He said I was very lucky...

and I am luck that I can hang and BS while they work on the blazer also.

But my question is that why does the blazer idle better now? I'm not complaing but would the gaskets make it idle rough or the distributer?

So they replaced the gaskets, thermostat, distributor, flushed the cooling and did an oil change...

Could have been a combination of the bad gasket allowing a vacuum leak and the distributor not allowing for proper spark timing.

Sounds like its all better now though so, good deal!

Wow only 847? I had to do that repair and it took me five days to do! I can't believe you got out for under a grand! What is the name of that shop? It sounds like a really nice place.

Regards,

Thomas

$847... Sounds high to me. There really isn't anything mystical about this nor is it really too time consuming for a full time mechanic.

The book calls for 3.6hrs w/ AC, 3.4hrs w/o A/C. So even at $100/hr shop time, looks like you either paid $487 for the parts or you paid for someone to fumble through the replacement charging you by the hour.

i'll say they raped you, it only cost me $178.42 CAN for a complete, NEW distributor assembly, and the gaskets were $73.91 CAN.
