Depending on where you're from I'd be weary of the old Masking tape and Bondo body work trick... I'll take a speaker magnet with me sometimes and when the guy's not looking I run my hand along the rocker panel with my fingers between the magnet and the steel. If there's steel missing you'll feel it.

I don't know how the old K5's were, but I'd check to make sure the carpet's dry in the back, if its wet, that roof leaks.

Wrap the magnet in a thin cloth. I would`t worry about hiding what you are doing. That`s obviously a newer paint job, ask about body work. Since it`s black body work is usually easy to spot unless it was done very well.

Jack up the front, floor jack preferred, and check for play at both wheels. While it`s in the air check the exhaust, floorboards, etc.

Check the oil, does it smell burnt? Same with the trans fluid if it`s an auto.

Drive it out on the highway at speed. Just around town is`t enough.

New Bats? As in batteries? That`s a nice little extra, especially in a cold climate.
