Default RE: head lights

Usually, both types use the same type of bulb (some variant of the good ol' H4 halogen bulbs). The difference you see is that they redesign the lens and reflector for the upper range models. The base-model lights have a smooth reflector and spread the light using facets in the lens. The "nicer" lights have a more faceted reflector and use a smooth lens - which makes them look nicer when the lights aren't on.

This doesn't include the "really nicer" HID projectorlighting systems. Those are expensive options or evenstandard equipment on high-end cars, but not usually available on most trucks and carsunless you go to the aftermarket.
