Try going to an open parking lot or someplace where you can drive in circles. When your 4wd is engaged it will tug on the wheel when your making tight turns. If your making a tight turn and everything feels normal, then you are in 2wd

yea i tried that nd i felt normal. i hope the 4x4 isn't bad. Would the lights not coming on effect the 4x4 from engaging?

No, the lights may just be burned out. My light for 2wd went out and it was simple to replace. Another good way to test if the four wheel drive is working, is to put the truck in neutral, put it in 4lo, and put it back in gear. If it engaged correctly, you should feel the truck "jerk" pretty hard and almost squat down a little bit. Then, if you start driving, you shouldn't be able to drive very fast when it's in 4lo. I hope you can understand what I was getting at lol.

While your truck is running, lay down next to it and see if you can spin the front driveshaft by hand. In 2WD, the driveshaft should spin freely but when you press the 4WD button, both the front differential and transfer case engage the driveshaft and it will only spin while the vehicle is in motion.
