Hydrogen

RE: Hydrogen
the main problem with hydrogen is in fact thats its so explosive, and has such a low flash point, thats the problem they are having, it works for a whle then when the engine gets to warm the hydrogen goes off at random and too soon, blowing the motor

RE: Hydrogen
I don't think it will beTHAT concentrated. That really would suck... I may just fabricate a prototype and see how it goes and I'll report my findings. I'm definately not going to buy a $50 manual on how to make it, because I pretty much know the principles.

RE: Hydrogen
Just keep an eye on cost. Probably the biggest cost will be the supply of Hydrogen, either in the form of electrolosis or by purchasing commercial hydrogen. I'm not sure of the power requirements to effectively break away the hyrdogen, but if you hook into the vehicles charging system, and it takes alot of power, you're risking the vehicle/alternator, which tacks on a few more dollars.
I wonder what commercial hydrogen runs..

RE: Hydrogen
this sounds like something i could bring up in advanced chem monday lol
ill see if the profeser doesnt like the idea and his doubts.

RE: Hydrogen
Euro, be extremely careful.... I would not even attempt this by yourself! Hydrogen is very very dangerous.. anyone remember the Hindenburg? The smallest hydrogen leak around spark or high temp can ignite, and I guarantee it will destroy your blazer in a fireball and put your life in jeopardy. You dont want to be doing homejobs that mess with hydrogen. . . . . i'm not just blowing smoke. I was in all advanced chem classes in High School and had several college credit hours (tested out of most) in chemistry. be careful with anything that produces hydrogen. You will also probably destroy your engine with something as powerfully explosive as hydrogen. It's a 4.3L, not exactly a high end engine designed for that kind of combustion or heat. . . just my $0.02... however when you post a thread in the near future about blowing your motor or your truck catching on fire, I will say I TOLD YOU SO. . .
*EDIT*
I actually discussed this very thing a year ago with a man who has a doctorate in chemistry. He said its a terrible idea that is likely to get someone hurt. Weigh it out, is safety worth a couple extra mpg?

RE: Hydrogen
I really don't think that will produce enough hydrogen, fast enough. An effective electrolsis system that we use in our chem labs to produce hydrogen runs of a few hundred volts, and upwards of 200 amps. Not something you'll get in a vehicle with 12v DC supply.

RE: Hydrogen
How many liters per minute is that?
This is looking more and more complicated. Tricky containing it.. it'll escape right through plastic. Glass container.... but still doesn't solve the problem of delivery. Gotta be tapped into a vacuum line.
This is still just a thinkpeice for me. I probably won't end up doing it on the Blazer. I may do it on the Yota...

RE: Hydrogen
Well I hope you figure it out, I just don't see it happening short of securing a research grant
If you do, I'll be the first to buy your little kit / follow your plans!

approxiatelytwo weeks ago, the XPRIZE Foundation (the people behind the Ansari X Prize awarded to SpaceShipOne in 2004) said they will give $10mil to the people that develop the first car that can get 100mpg...more details HERE
just a little incentive for you to think about as you work on it
i've heard of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles but this seems to be different than that.it sounds very interesting. keep us updated if you get any more info about it
