Muffler fitting
Buying a Flowmaster 40 series muffler, without the kit.
I'm sure it's possible, but wouldn't the different size muffler require different pipes? |
RE: Muffler fitting
auto parts stores sell adapters that can hook up from any size pipe to any size inlet on the muffler. flowmaster should have our size though.
|
RE: Muffler fitting
Yeah but I mean length wise.
And we have 2.25 or 2.50? I'm about to buy this http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/pr...oducts_id=3429 |
RE: Muffler fitting
ok here is my problem, i was told that our pipe was 2.25 in and out of the muffler, but sawed mine of right at the front of the muffler and then went to attatch mine and it was the same exact size as my new one wich is 2.25 id, so u need to get on that fits over that or do like i did and get and adapter. i got one that fit over the end to lengthen the pipe after the exhaust flange, and then stretched it to fit. it was probubly way more difficult that it should have been but...
u should go to the live chat like said, and we can talk about it. |
RE: Muffler fitting
So it IS 2.25? What are the pipes? 2.25? An adapter would work good, but yeah live chat should be easier.
|
RE: Muffler fitting
the problem is the flowmaster muffler dont fit right in the place of the stock.. The stock one is a good 5 inches longer
|
RE: Muffler fitting
There was no problem fitting mine. Just cut the pipe in front and behind the original muffler, center the Flowmaster (or any other muffler) and weld on the appropriate length of new tubing to each end to place the new muffler in the same center point as the old.
|
RE: Muffler fitting
My muffler is almost as long as the stock one :D
My factory sized pipe is 2.5" The tail pipe is 2.25" |
RE: Muffler fitting
Yeah, the stock one is a lot bigger so the tail pipe would be too short when it's attached to the shorted muffler.. Right?
|
RE: Muffler fitting
Yeah that's what I thought from the pictures I took. I could use a reducer from the pipe to the inlet, and regular weld for the outlet to the tail pipe?
I was also thinking get a 2.5 muffler, and buy a 2.5 tail pipe. |
RE: Muffler fitting
Go for the bigger tail pipe... it'll make the sound a touch deeper and louder
|
RE: Muffler fitting
Yeah, because if I get the 2.5 tail pipe I'll be running 2.5 pipes all throughout the truck with a 2.5 muffler.
I can probably find tail pipes anywhere, any good specific brands? And will bending and cutting have to be done? |
RE: Muffler fitting
Your muffler shop can probably order one in that's a direct replacement... but 2.5" instead.
Any good shop should be able to bend one up for ya no problem, unless you want a fancy looking tip on the end, in which case, as long as it's stainless steel, and you like the looks of it, the shop can put it on the end of the tailpipe for ya. |
RE: Muffler fitting
I have to look for a shop near me who could install the muffler so they can order a larger pipe for me. Originally I was gonna take it to my mechanic but a performance shop would obviously be better.
I was looking at universal 2.5 inch pipes that require welding, but there's pretty good flowmaster tail pipes. |
RE: Muffler fitting
If you get one bent by the shop, make sure they use a mandrel bender...
The tailpipe is just that... a piece of pipe, lol. The shiny part at the end is just a tip... |
RE: Muffler fitting
Yeah, I might buy a tip for it. I want a pretty big tip.
|
RE: Muffler fitting
this is what my tip looks like.
CLICK (huge pic BTW) that picture makes it look like the tip on the right is sticking out further than the tip on the left. thats just b/c of the curve in the bumper. i promise, it really is straight |
RE: Muffler fitting
Yeah, those are nice tips, I was looking at a few like that but I'd probably get stainless steal since it's cheaper than chrome.
|
RE: Muffler fitting
I need to get a fancy tip for mine one of these days, lol... maybe go for a double outlet like that, see how it affects my sound...
|
RE: Muffler fitting
I'm not sure which looks better, a tail pipe that comes out the side, or a tail pipe that goes straight out the back.
If I got one that goes straight out the back, I'd put a dual tip on it, but I think it would look weird coming out the side. |
RE: Muffler fitting
It looked good on my parents '88 Suburban... And it came from the factory like that, lol
|
RE: Muffler fitting
does anyone here have a blazer without a muffler on? my friend has a 2000 chevy 1500 without a muffler on with duels and it sounds so good.

RE: Muffler fitting
I'd love to run a straight pipe. Cut it short and have it run out from under th door so it spits fire.
No muffler, no cat, but I can imagine the carbon monoxide. Any truck sounds amazing with straight pipes, but like me and my friends were saying, you'd be sitting at a train crossing and end up dieing in a cloud of exhaust. Also you can't pass inspections with it due to high emissions. My dad would probably get mad though, saying when I come home at 4 in the morning I'm waking up the neighborhood. |
RE: Muffler fitting
What looked good?
A dual tip? I know the Chevy Suburbans have like 3" pipes though, so they all sound pretty good. |
RE: Muffler fitting
If you are going to run it out the back have them make ya duals. It looks much better than just one pipe coming out the back. I think they also look sharp being sideswept right in front of the rear tires.
|
RE: Muffler fitting
Thats what i am doing over my christmas break, ill have pictures for you guys soon. im putting a nice tip on it too, only thing is, its kind of a ricer tip, but it still looks good
|
RE: Muffler fitting
YES, I was thinking about doing that but I think my muffler ends right behind the rear tire so it would be hard to run a pipe infront of it, and it would have to go under the frame so it would be a really weird bend.
|
RE: Muffler fitting
The old suburban had the dual outs behind the rear wheel...
I liked it... Not just the sound (350!) but the look... |
RE: Muffler fitting
I'm wanting to send mine out the back with duals, not true duals, it would be too hard to get the pipes through, now wheres near enough space under there. I also want to get a Super 40 for it. The problem is when I finally have this done I'm going to do the whole thing, headers and all. My opinion is that if your going to do it might as well do it right.

otnietdehoooo
Nice TIPS! |
RE: Muffler fitting
I know, I looked under the truck and it looked impossible to run another pipe.
And yeah, the suburbans look really good with the pipe out the side like that. Not sure if I should go out the side, or straight to the back. If I go straight to the back, I'll put dual tips. If I run it out the side, I'll just put the biggest tip that I can find. |
