Default SUV camping extension

So I found these pictures of an extension for camping in a small SUV. I've slept in the back of mine but this would be nicer, giving more room inside and with a hard body, more weather resistant. I also like that you can open the back door from the inside (which I cannot do with mine). I can also imagine draping a tarp over the lift gate for added shelter.

If I were to do it, I'd coat it with epoxy and then paint it. I'd likely install a window in the door too.

Thanks for posting! This is a good idea, especially to give the extra little room like you said. I've seen tents that come off the back of pickups, and thought it could work with the split gated blazers, but never really thought about a lift gate setup.

side note, it looks like the back half of that tracker is a removable top, which I dont remember seeing on those years around here...

I can see adding legs to it if necessary to support it but that would be straight forward.

I much prefer just towing a small travel trailer with the axle flipped. Small and light enough to tow with the Blazer but sits high enough to get off the beaten path. Bit more pricey than what you have posted but much nicer to have a queen bed to sleep in and a bathroom, particularly in the middle of the night. We have a StarCraft AR Extreme 18QB. Weighs in around 3400lbs dry, single axle flipped with plenty of storage. Perfect for my wife and me and a dog named Tuco!

Personally, I would go with a rooftop tent (if I could afford one, that is).

Yeah but when I'm by myself, I like the simplicity of just crawling in the back. Also, if I'm in bear country, I like having a hard shell. I also could see the possibility of adding a bit of insulation to the box. This would be good for just me.

Yeah, someday I'll get myself a small camp trailer. At the moment I have no space for one and I really hate the idea of paying for storage. LOL
