Default Is there a chip in the key for my '03?

My apologies if this is covered in another thread already, but I'm wondering if my '03 LS would have a chip in the key. I just bought it a few months ago, and it only came with one key, so I need a backup.

they should be able to check it for you where ever you go to get a key cut. I dont think it does , my 05 does not.

No chip in any S-Series truck keys. 98-2005 used the Passlock II system, which has a resistance code built into the lock cylinder. You can get a generic duplicate key cut without any programming needed.

Indeed, no chip. A replacement took a couple of minutes to cut and about five bucks from my pocket. Thanks.

Default Thank goodness! No chip in the 2003 LS key!

I can go to Lowe's or Home Depot and get a highly trained tech to carve out a new key for $1.97 which includes tax. For that , you can get a couple extra to hide so when you lose your key or lock it in the Blazer, you have a handy spare. I am thinking of using electrical tape and taping one on my external tire carrier for emergencies. If you secure it behind the spare , it will not be obvious.

Two thumbs up jim , I cant understand why everyone doesn't have a hidden key , even after some people lock their keys in the car they still don't get it.

They sell magnetic boxes just for this purpose.

Yes, they do sell magnetic boxes for that purpose. To me, that is one of the flaws of the mag. box. They are fairly common and therefore easy to spot by a potential thief. They are difficult to get to esp. in your dress clothes on a rainy day, and also easy to dislodge especially when driving in rough going. I like to be able to swing open my spare tire rack and use my handy pocket knife to free my hidden spare key. Please don't tell where I have hidden it. That's a secret.
