Default topping off gas tank

i work at a gas station while trying to pursue a real career, and the age old question keeps coming up. i was curious of when the pump clicks off, adding extra gas to it ($1-3) after it clicks, is that a bad thing?

some cars like mercedes say on the gas door not to top off but other than them ive never seen it

is it bad for your vehicle/ fuel pump?

i dont think it would cause any problems on older cars. maybe on some more fancier cars it might bleed into the venting system or something but doubt it. i just dont recommend it cause it can spill over your paint.

my trucks i can add an extra gallon in after it clicks, was always curious cause people complain it ruins stuff, and i dont argue with them, just dont see if its not posted how it could hurt unless as you mentioned the paint if overflow happened

I guess it depends on the year I would think, newer cars with that stupid trap door they have to prevent stealing gas or whatever might cause some problems... maybe?

I've done it in every car I've filled never had a problem my thought is as mentioned previously it's just precaution so not to get gas on the paint, but then I've never fueled up none of those high end fancy jobs.
