The owner's manual says that towing capacity ranges between 4,0000 and 5,000 lbs depending on transmission and axle ratio. I have an automatic 1998 GMC Jimmy with 3.42 gear ratio so my towing capacity is 5,000 lbs.

Do you have a bumper hitch or is it frame mounted? I don't think I would tow any amount with the bumper hitch.

My 99 has a tow rating of 5,000 or 5,500.lbs but for extended trip, I prefer to tow no more than about half that.

I live and tow where it can get hot and have some steep grades. So I installed a larger radiator and perhaps more importantly, a Hayden 699 trans cooler.

Finally, never tow in over-drive. I ruined my transmission doing that.
