Default Tranny flush a bad idea?

I've been told on a couple of occasions that the detergent in new tranny fluid actually removes the gunk inside and it can go through the tranny and cause failure. I'm sure my blazer has never had a tranny flush but I would like to do one. I had a 95 Lumina and did a tranny flush and it started slipping within a couple days leading to failure within 3 weeks... Never had a tranny problem before that. Coincidence? Just like to hear some thoughts.

I've heard the same thing. On my old jimmy I changed the fluid and filter and then changed them again a week later as a precaution.

that's kind of a "Damned if you do, damned if you don't" scenario.

when i changed all te fluids in my Blazer after i bought it last year, i wanted to do a flush, but my trany guy told me to just change the filter & fluid sooner the next time, if i was concered about the original owner's lack of maintance.

think about it ('cause i was thinking the same route as you), we gonna force all the crud stuck in a corner somewhere, through the passage ways in a "large" chunk, as opposed to the fluid slowly breaking down the contaminates over time.

i had the similar type of issue with my LeSabre, as you did with your Lumina. i put in some of that Slick 50 stuff (way back when) and less than a month later, the engine broke-snapped the crank between mains #3 & #4, which twisted rods 5, 7, & 8-due to blocked oil passages. coincidence? who knows.................

I myself change the tranny fluid once a year in the Blazer. I've had a full tranny flush done last year. You got to look at this way, it's going to fail at some point whether you flush or not.

I bought my blazer only 3 months ago. I changed the fuel filter yesterday and it looks like the original. It was a horrible black color when I dumped the excess gas into a container. So I'm assuming nothing else was regularly maintained. And yes it may fail at some point but I wouldn't want to accelerate it in anyway.

I never was a fan of Slick50. Just like penzoil it was full of teflon or liquid ball bearings that when they broke down they turned into tiny flecks of hard plastic. But that's a long term effect. Doesn't explain what happened to your motor. Anybody know if penzoil is still using teflon? Back to the topic at hand I just finished putting my engine together and had the tranny flushed. It's seems to be slipping a little, I am deffinately planning on changing the filter and new fluid as soon as I can afford it. So to answer the original question, no do not flush the tranny, replace the filter and service it the right way (i wish i had).
