I use AC Delco since they are free for me. If I had to buy one it would be Mobile 1

I have debated this for months..........I used to use fram, but with my 03 s10, i used mobile 1 synthetic oil, mobile 1 filter, and ran chevron mid-grade gas. I could go 5000 miles before an oil change, and the oil was still amber

on my 93, i run a mobile 1 filter, castrol oil, and run arco low-grade gas.its been 50 miles, and it needs a change again lol

but the tranny just went out, so guess what gets first priority HAHAHA

why do you need t change it after 50? remember you're not using a synthetic in your '93 (they tend to stay cleaner a bit longer), so it'll get dirty faster. besides, you didn't own the truck from day 1 (i taking a guess here) and have no idea how the truck was maintained before you.
a little trick i learned a loooong time ago was, pour a little ATF (i 've only used Dexron, never owned an automatic Ford) in the engine before your next oil change. i'm only talking half a liter, and only run it for 5 or 10 minutes (basically drive it a few blocks). do this, and in a few oil changes, the oil should be coming back out at the change intervals still looking amber and transparent. i bought an '81 Chev p/u (as base model as you could get) with less than 72K (45 miles) put on it in 11 yrs, and the oil was as black as tar. within 6 mths (i change my oil every month), the oil was coming out amber again.

when I bought it, it had the leaking oil cooler lines. the guy figured since old oil was leaking out, by putting in clean oil, it was the same as an oil change.

I do the tranny fluid thing too. I dumped a quart in, and then drove to reno, nevada from riverside, CA. The real fun was when the tranny fluid AND oil squirted out of the cooler lines on the trip. I didnt notice, but the connection was loose. It must have rattled loose on the long trip lol oops

you drove it from Reno to Riverside? that's gotta be, like, 7 or 8 hours! brother, you know why the trans fluid will eventually clean out your engine, right?...........it's 'cause it breaks down some of the crap & contaminants inside your engine, the same stuff that impregnates your gaskets over the years, and it'll cause the gaskets to leak, if you run your engine @ temp to long. if this was a one time thing, i'd try not to do it again, you're gonna end up with a wet engine if you keep it up (ie. wet engine=leaky engine).
didn't you notice the cloud of smoke trailing your truck as you drove? when the lines went on my jimmy, it sprayed allover the y-pipe, smoked like a bastard. hopefully you caught it before you ran her dry.

yeah it was a one time thing. No I didnt see a cloud of smoke following me, because the leak was at the radiator, not the filter. The engine didnt leak, but the tranny gasket did. I always stop, and check fluid levels on long trips, even in a new car. I did notice that the engine ran great afterwards though, and started first crank. If I didnt think it was safe, I wouldnt have done it. The mechanic I learned it from said that it would be safe, just not for long periods, and that it would be fine on the trip, otherwise I would not have done it.

I should have put the fluid in the tranny though.........the tranny went out on friday

Ive been looking through here for the filters and seems to be a perosnal choice, I will be probably looking at going the fram route..

Just one other question, how come over here in the states people are changing the oil in there vehicles every 3-4000 miles ? I could understand that if the engine was a performance engine, subaru, mustang etc

having moved from england last november, there we changed oil at about 10,000 miles or there abouts..

just a question for you all

for hotrod413, that sucks, BIG TIME!

as for the oil change intervals here in North America Black_04_Blazer (3000 miles/5000 kilometers), you guys are running regular oil over there, not synthetic, right? have you ever looked @ your oil when it's gone that many miles?
i bought a car from an old lady once, who said she changed her oil regulary because she did drive it that much ("always had it serviced up the street", she said). when i asked her when the last one was done, see said that it was "due for service next week". i bought the car, and when i went to do a full service of the car the next day, the oil came out like water! since she told me where she had it serviced, i went by the garage, and started talking to the mechanic (small shop, only one mechanic and an apprentice) who remembered the lady, turns out she changed the oil on a regular basis alright-once a year! (about 15000 kilometers, by his guess). every Spring the old bat would bring her car in for a tune up and service, and the mechanic said he was always trying to get her in for more regular services, but she wouldn't bring it in. apparently, she was under the impression that since she only went on long summer road trips the oil would "burn off any bad stuff in it" (her words!), 'cause thats what her late husband had always told her!
i personally change my oil the 1st of every month regardless of how many miles have been put on (sometimes i only drive 3000 kilometers), sooner if i've hit the 5K mark before the end of the month. hell i usually change it right before a road trip, and when i get back.
i figure a few extra oil changes are still cheaper than rebuilding an engine (especially a diesel) because the oil was in there too long.
