My F150 had 251,000 miles on it when I (foolishly) traded it in last year. Ran like a top and never had the valve cover (300 six) off it.
My IROC Z28 has 185,000 miles on it and runs like a top.
I've put 150,000 miles or more on a couple other vehicles with no issues.
I've never filled up the oil filter at oil/filter changes.

I've worked on machines @ work with LARGE oil filters in the vertical position on cummins engines... asked the mechanics at work if i should fill or not and i was told by them NOT to fill it as you're pumping unfiltered oil through the engine, so now i never fill any oil filter.
I DOUBT u could ever get enough oil out of the motor that it would run dry at any given point during a start up, unless you let it sit for an extended period of time that it just drains out or breaks down.

I'm not sure how you would be pumping unfiltered oil through the engine if you fill the filter with fresh, clean oil... If you have to worry that much about the quality of the oil coming out of the new container, you need a new oil supplier.
I too always fill the filter even if it's a horizontal mount. Fill it up and allow the filter material to soak up as much oil as it can, then pour out the excess and screw it on. It's the way I was taught and it really doesn't take any more time to do. As stated, it couldn't hurt.
And always coat the seal ring with fresh oil to make it easier to remove later. Every time I forgot to do this, I ended up bashing the heck out of the filter to get it off.

I was taught to coat the ring with fresh oil, fill the filter up about half way and put the bad boy on. Has never let me down yet....alot of people say its a waste of time, But it take 30 seconds to do it my way....And 1or2 days to change a motor if damage does happen so i stick with what i know
