Default tranny probs

my blazer has been running like **** lately... bogs down cant decide whether it wants to be in overdrive or 3rd and i got a code for tranny comp slipping... i took it in today and they said it might be the torque convertor or the torque converter valve... which kinda makes sense... but they want to charge me $585 to take it apart see whats wrong and what needs to be fixed...... now when they find the problem the 585 goes away and i only pay for the part that needs to be fixed... but if its just gunked up lol i still pay 585... i dont like those options....
