Mass Airflow Sensor

Mass Airflow Sensor
I'm pretty new to the forum but I need a good opinion on this.
I Have a 2000 Lswith a stock 262 motor. I just put on a Specterram air intake with a 11.5' filter. The system connects directly to the stock Mass airflow sensor, but the element in the sensor is a fine mesh screen. The screen significantly reduces the velocity of the passing air and makes the ram air system practically pointless. Can the screen becut outwithout destroying the stock sensor? Do I needan aftermarket sensor?the problem is the aftrmrkt sensor is well over 200 bucks. Does anyone kwow of any cheaper MAF sensors?

RE: Mass Airflow Sensor
The screen does not restrict the flow, it straightens it to provide a uniform airflow through the sensor. Sure, you can remove it if you feel that it is holding you back, but in the 3800 community, it has been proven to be of no gain when removing the MAF screen on supercharged motors and, in fact, created some idling issues when removed.
I wouldn't even think about removing it.
Just another bit of insight FWIW... This sensor is the exact same sensor that is used on the 5.7L Vortec v8. If it can support the additional airflow of a v8...

RE: Mass Airflow Sensor
Do not remove the screen! I did it on my Blazer with K&N CAI and it ran horrible. Had to fork over $300 for a Granatelli with Cold Air Tuning, and all problems seem to be resolved!
