Default 1996 Blazer starts with key in RUN position

Hello,

My starter engages when I turn the key to the RUN position, and stays engages even after the engine has started. If I shift it to any other gear, it will stop. Also, if I rev the motor, it will stop.

I also have the weird electrical problem with the rear hatch, under a different post in this same section. Could they be related?

Thanks,
LtArcticWolf

Update: I went to the local auto parts store and the manager told me to start with the key lock cylinder. He said that it may be possible that the tumblers inside the cylinder were acting improper.

I went ahead and bought the cylinder, borrowed a steering wheel puller, and spent about 30 minutes tearing it apart. The new cylinder had no effect on the issue.

Does this mean that the starter solenoid isn't releasing properly? Or would this be an ignition starting switch?

Sounds more like bad contacts in the ignition switch than anything with the cylinder. Check out the link in my signature. If it is the ignition switch, then just hitting the steering column should cause the starter to disengage.

I just had this happen a few weeks ago. I had replaced the ignition switch in October of 09 with an aftermarket switch. It suddenly started to engage the starter in the run position. Replaced the switch and all is good Switch had a lifetime warranty so all it cost me was time.
