Default 4 wheel drive switch indicates its stuck in 4 HI

4 wheel drive switch indicates its stuck in 4 HI, got sounds in the dash and underneath like its trying to shift, 4HI to 4LO and return works just fine. I was sponging around looking for an answer and didn't find anything except lost of cant get into 4x4, if anyone has an idea on what to check or do I would appreciate it

NV233 No Mode Switch (ie. 2HI to 4HI) gives you some things to check. You'd need to compare the wiring diagrams to make the necessary adjustments to the procedure that was created for the 2nd gens in terms of the connector terminal references.

It often requires a little bit of movement on the part of the vehicle to change modes/ranges. The move from 4HI to 2HI should be "easier" than the move from 4HI to 4LO, but these wonderful encoder motors do have their quirks.

Funny thing is I don't remember ever engaging the 4wheel drive before the battery was disconnected for a few weeks while working on it. Then when connecting it back up it was, or at least indicated it was in 4HI... so yes id aggree it has something in it... (note to self no water or food after midnight....)

The early electronic 4wd setups could sometimes be flakey after a battery disconnect/reconnect.
