Default Alternator vs Puddles?

I've had my 2000 Blazer 4X4 die twice in the past week just as I got it home. Driving home at regular speed, (thru bad slushy winter weather) pull into park and I notice the amps drop from 14 to 12,11,10 then slowly drain out to nothing. First time I jumped it and drove it the rest of the week without an issue. I hit a fairly big puddle both times so i wonder if that has anything to do with this problem. Someone had mentioned the relay IN the alternator is bad as well. Open to suggestions.

The gauge on the dash is the system voltage. If it drops to nothing with the engine running and in short order and the engine doesn't stall, I would wonder if there isn't a problem with the ignition switch providing power to the cluster. Is the volt gauge the only one that shows signs of having a problem?

I have replaced the battery and since have had to get a boost. Sometimes when I turn it over the gauge sticks at 9 till I rev up a bit then it kicks up to 14. the volt gauge is the only gauge that has a problem. until the amps drop to 0 then everything dies...radio, speedometer, tachometer
