Hi all,

I've done a ton of searching for this on here and Google, but haven't come across quite what I'm looking for.

I bought a set of LED flood offroad lights for my 99 Jimmy with the thought that I could mount them on the grille. I think I've seen that done before. The more I think about it, the more I worry about the grille cracking under the stress over time. I thought maybe I could get some big washers or something to help distribute the force, but I don't know if that will be enough.

Has anyone done this before and have advice on whether or not it's a good idea. Or should I drill into the bumper instead? Is there a good/right way to do it? I may buy a bull bar/grille guard at some point, but not at the moment and I don't want to plan on that for this install.

How about getting a brush guard? Nice location to mount lights. I put them on all of my trucks and they don't break the bank. A brush guard actually saved my Durango from being a total loss (probably) by absorbing the shock of a Jersey Barrier when myself and others became hockey pucks coming off the PA Turnpike several years ago. Brush guard was toast and the fender had to be replaced, but didn't end up with a bent frame from or any other major damage.

 

I have considered it, but was hoping to put it off for now. I guess if I found one that wasn't too big of an investment I might go for it.

 

from my experience with these S series, I wouldn't mount anything like that to the grill... 20 years ago sure, but after baking in the sun the plastics on the exterior of these trucks just aren't what they use to be...

I can definitely understand about the grille. I was concerned they would be too flimsy. What about the bumper right in front of the grille? I looked at a lot of brush/grille guards and the good ones appear to range from $300 and up. Not sure I want to part with that much cash right now. I need to use that $ to fix a few things on the truck. :P

 

Blazen, your lights look like a similar style to mine. How hot do they get? Hot enough to melt plastic near them?

 

Not that I have noticed. They're both cheap China made units... less than $200 between both of them lol Still bright enough for me though. I've already had to pull the curved 50" apart and de-moisturize it and reseal it...
